My name is Johny Yim. I am a graphic designer based in Long Beach CA.
Growing up art was always a part of my life. I grew up as a latchkey kid and spent my days after school watching cartoons, drawings and writing stories before my parents got home. I always wanted my future career to be in something art related. No matter what it was going to be, I wanted it to be surrounded by art. As I entered college i discovered the world of graphic design. At first I thought graphic design was just creating logos and t-shirts, but then i learned that graphic design can be pretty much anything. From brochures to maps, to soda cans to websites. I love that no matter what you're interested in, there is most likely a graphic designer to help build that franchise you're into.
I started learning on my own, youtube videos and books i found helped me learn as much as I could intake on my own. But I knew that i wanted more structure with my learning, so I took a  Udemy class with Lindsay Marsh. Thanks to the instructor and the community her class provides, I was able to sharpen my skills and grow further. After a year, I then decided to learn even further and wanted a more hands on approach, so I took a class at my community college. Thanks to my professor, Mrs. Gill, I sharpened my skill even further and even made friends with colleagues who had the same passion as me.
Because of my work in the class my professor asked me to not only enter the student art gallery but also create the cover art for the whole event. I was so surprised and felt so much honor when she asked me and I am grateful that she believed in my skills. As you will see below my personal stationary design was placed in the gallery and i even won a scholarship award.
I am still learning and practicing almost every day, consuming graphic design in my daily life. Either through just walking around and taking in design i see in the world and even watching some youtube videos from designers that i admire. I will always continue to learn and will take any experience i can to hone my skills.
